We the unwilling, led by the unqualified, have been doing the unbelievable for so long, with so little, we now attempt the impossible with nothing. - Mini-School Credo

Mark Warren Trip

December 1, 2000 by Mini Archives

By Zach Hobbs

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be stranded and not be able to survive. Well thanks to Mark Warren I will hopefully not have this problem if I ever am faced with this situation. Mark had two goals in mind. His first goal was of course to show us how to survive. Second and the more important goal was to get you to work at whatever you were. Mark has really opened a whole new door for me and my fellow colleagues who were a part of this trip as well.

Mark showed us everything from moving through the forest without a sound, to making fire with simply a stick a rock and a piece of wood. Mark has spent most of his life studying nature and its ways. He has been doing this trip for nearly 13 years and every time is different and new for him. Mark would continually tell us that if we didn’t succeed in our goal, we better die trying.

Out of the groups that went on this trip this year, every single one of them was able to make fire. There were also a few lucky and hard working souls from both groups who were able to make it on their own.

The final day of the trip consisted of waking at 6:00 a.m., cleaning our tents, and gathering our gear. Then it was off to the sweat lodge for sweating and serious conversation. The sweat lodge was really the turning point in the trip for me, and I’m sure this is true for many others who went on, or have been on this trip in the past.

Over all, the Mark Warren Trip was very much worth the time spent in the woods with nature and the bugs of this world. There are many good things I got out of this trip: many good survival tips and just many good experiences. I would take the trip again if the opportunity were there.
